Oct. 28th, 2008 01:48 pmIt takes some willpower, but eventually his focus returns. He's done this before, and usually, he's quite good at putting these sort of troubles out of his mind. Lingering doesn't help, he's learned that. No reason to do it now.
So he pushes the memory of Romana's anger to the back of his mind and focuses on the important thing he's found out: that apparently, part of his memories are missing. Sadly not the part he would like to get rid of - but there's no point in thinking like that. He needs to find out how much is gone, and then he needs to find a way to get them back. Step by step, giving himself something to concentrate on.
He starts sifting through the TARDIS database, calling up the journey records. They're sorted chronologically, following the TARDIS' own time line. He returns to the database entry on the trip to Paris, that trip that he apparently took with a pretty young Time Lady and that he can't remember at all. For a short moment, he wonders if they'd been traveling together as friends, or if there maybe had been a particular reason they had picked the romantic city of Paris as their destination, but then he puts that line of thought out of his mind. He'll find that part out soon enough.
He flicks to the previous entry, and when he sees the planet's ID number, it gives him a pause. It's HJ8796-D, which is the TARDIS' planetary code for Skaro. So if Romana had been with him at that point - and there's no reason to assume that she hadn't - they had gone to Skaro together, and had probably fought the Daleks together.
He runs a hand through his hair, wishing he could remember. Flicking further back, he comes across more trips he has no recollection of whatsoever, but they start to be interspersed with destinations he can recall visiting - Pluto, Titan, and of course countless trips to Earth. Going down the time line in the other direction, he finds that he's been to Skonnos, a planet he's never even heard of. There's Traken, and that one he does remember - it's where he met Nyssa. From that point on, places and planetary codes start to sound more familiar again.
He turns off the scanner, thoughtfully. There's a huge chunk missing; a big part of the life of his forth regeneration simply erased. But only for him, apparently - Romana remembers. Nobody fiddled with the time line; it must be something about him that's causing this strangely specific amnesia. Something he's done, maybe? Not that he's done anything since he took Donna back home, aside from wandering about the Earth and watching the humans settle back in. Maybe this has something to do with the metacrisis, or the botched regeneration?
Romana had been right, he'll be needing help with this. The Time Lords may be gone, but the technology had survived, at least partly. The Doctor knows the exact place he needs to go to start his research into this matter.
He's just about to start up the TARDIS when suddenly, there's a knock on his door. He looks up sharply.
